Engineering and Advanced Technology Expertise Add Key Strengths
Virginia Beach, VA – April 28, 2008
– The GBS Group, a business consulting and technical services
company, is pleased to announce the hiring of Rear Admiral Millard S.
Firebaugh, USN (Ret.) of Annapolis, MD, to the GBS team. He will provide consulting support
to the company and join the company’s Board of Advisors. Admiral Firebaugh
is a recognized leader in naval engineering and advanced technology. He has
held distinguished leadership positions in research and development,
naval ship and system design, submarine technology and warfighting technologies,
advanced power systems, and electronics. His expertise in business, management,
education, and personnel development extend from his distinguished naval
career and work in the corporate and academic arenas.

Admiral Firebaugh's 34-year career with the Navy included service in the
headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command. Millard held various leadership
positions in submarine design and naval architecture, design of the SSN688
Class Vertical Launch System, and program management to initiate design and
construction of Seawolf Class submarines. After seeing the program through
design construction of the first two submarines of the class, he became Chief
Engineer of the Naval Sea Systems Command, serving in that position until his
retirement from the Navy in 1995. After departing the Navy, Admiral Firebaugh
was involved in various technical activities including the remediation of nuclear
waste. In 1997, he returned to the submarine business as Director for Innovation
& Chief Engineer at General Dynamics’ Electric Boat Corporation. He also served
as President and COO at SatCon Technology Corporation in Boston, MA, a $36M power
systems and electronics company, specializing in advanced power applications
for alternative energy, hybrid electric vehicles, and high reliability electronics
for industrial, aerospace and defense markets. In addition to his ongoing
consulting work, Firebaugh currently serves as a professor of Practice at the
University of Maryland in College Park, MD in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
Admiral Firebaugh holds the American Society of Naval Engineers Gold Medal and the US
Navy Distinguished Service Medal. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering,
the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, and the Cosmos Club of Washington, DC.
He also is the editor of the second edition of “Naval Engineering and American Sea
Power.” Firebaugh earned his ScD degree in Ocean Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, after receiving a degree as a Naval Engineer, MS in Electrical Engineering,
and BS in Physics all from M.I.T., and was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree
from Webb Institute in 2002.
