USNS Zeus Cable Handling Equipment Controls/SCR Drives Upgrade

US Navy

The GBS Maritime team celebrated the end of the USNS Zeus Cable Handling Equipment Upgrade and is currently working on Optional Task 3 of the contract which is a post-install supportability phase. The USNS Zeus’s primary missions are to transport, deploy, retrieve and repair submarine cables and test underwater sound devices. Over the course of the last five years Steve Miller, Mike Cotton and the rest of the engineering, design, drafting and installation team have been working diligently on the USNS Zeus Cable Handling system upgrade. The new control system implements closed-loop control of the cable handling equipment in multiple modes of operation. Two new control consoles, four new operator chairs, and aging electric SCR Drives for the cable drum motors and DOHB motors were also replaced.
