Employee Highlight: Meet Peter Martinez
Peter Martinez is The GBS Group’s longest-tenured employee. And as you might imagine, he understands our company’s unique strengths and capabilities as well as anyone.
Since joining GBS in 2007 Pete has been relied upon to manage and execute people and projects – big and small – in all divisions of the company – in Maritime, Rail, Navy/DoD, and Home Automation (GBS Connected). As a licensed professional engineer, Pete brings to the table strong engineering skills and methodologies, but just as important, he has the most steady personality and can-do spirit. Around GBS we refer to Pete as a machine. He never says no to any challenge put in front of him and he always gives 100% to everything he does. As a Vice President at GBS, Pete currently serves as both the Rail & Transportation Division manager and the newly formed Norfolk Division manager.
Pete has even relocated — twice — between Philadelphia and Virginia Beach to better serve the company and our clients. Yet no matter which division or location he has worked in, Peter’s goal has always been the same: Helping our clients find real solutions to their most pressing engineering challenges.
I always look forward to the challenges of the position… There are always new challenges to address and work with the team to resolve.
One of the largest GBS projects Peter recalls working on was the modernization of the USNS Waters propulsion control system. He and his GBS colleagues worked closely with engineers from three other companies to develop an upgraded propulsion control system, diesel engine local control panels and machinery control automation system. The project’s design, development, testing and installation all went smoothly and on time. Even better, the ship displayed greater shaft RPM during sea trials and exceeded initial design expectations.
What’s most rewarding about my experience working at GBS is the diversity of the work we perform, and the ability to work in multiple divisions over the years
Pete’s favorite quote to live by –
Sweat equity is the most valuable equity there is. Know your business and industry better than anyone in the world. Love what you do or don’t do it.
– Mark Cuban
Peter is a native of Albany, NY. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY, and is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Virginia. He began his career in the Nuclear Engineering Department at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He later took a job at NAVSEACENLANT (Naval Sea Support Center, Atlantic), which changed names a few times, and when he left was called Mid Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC), where he grew from a young field engineer to a seasoned division manager, before joining The GBS Group. We are very lucky to have Pete on our Team.
Thanks for everything, Peter!
